The Stryken Dog Training Technique  was developed by Dr. SL Strydom more than 40 years ago.  He bred and showed German Shepard Dogs for many years.  He applied his academic expertise to construct a new framework for dog training and developed a unique training technique which he calls the Stryken Dog Training and Handling Technique.

The Training Technique is based on cognitive conditioning and the Handling Technique on kinetic commands.  Articles about his Training and Handling Technique have appeared in journals and newspapers and he has published articles on dog training in the international journal, Companion.

He was invited by the Human-Animal Contact Study Group  to present a series of lectures and demonstrations on animal behavior and dog training techniques for the public during 1997 with the well-known Prof. Johannes Odendal (University of Pretoria) and Dr. Melville Greenberg, also known as Dr. Platzund.  During these sessions he gave practical demonstrations and showed that anyone (also disabled people and children) can apply the Technique.  He proved that a seeming untrainable dog (a cross between a Labrador and a Rottweiler) can be trained to perform the basic obedience exercises.

Mr. HS Strydom, helped his dad from age 9 with the dog training and developed a great love and passion for dog training.  He took over from his dad in 2006 and still continues to train dogs and their handlers using the same Stryken Dog Training Technique.

He has done numerous training (show and basic obedience) for the well renowned Boerboel Breeder, Attie Badenhorst.

  • The Basic Obedience Course is to make your dog a manageable companion and to empower you to take control of your dog.  It also forms the foundation for further training.  At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of achievement and a manual of prescribed obedience exercises to be practiced in your own time.  This course is guaranteed.  Your dog will enjoy the sessions and you will experience the therapeutic value of the exercises.

  • Once the Basic Obedience Course is mastered, and you as the handler have exercised at home and have full control over your dog, you can consider registering for the Stryken Advanced Obedience Course where we remove the choke chain and leash.

  • Stryken Dog Training also has a Protection and Watchdog course.  Not all dogs have the “drive” and personality for this.  To qualify for this course, you and your dog must have mastered the Basic Obedience Course, you as handler must have full control over your dog, your dog must have the right personality and your dog must be at least 12 months old.
